Weight Loss Article - Dieting and the Holidays
"Eat, drink and be merry?
Can I really do that while I'm trying to lose weight?"
Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it with some caveats.
By "eat" we mean stay on the weight loss program as best
you can; by "drink" we recommend water and juice, not
booze; and by "be merry" we mean don't regret the inevitable
short-term departure from your program.
Holidays and vacations are meant to be enjoyed. You prepare yourself
for the occasion weeks ahead of time and when the time arrives it's
impossible to not get caught up in the spirit of things. In the
excitement of preparation and celebration we hope that you won't
forget about your program entirely. At the same time, we hope
you won't ruin your vacation by being obsessed with all of the rules
you have learned.
To further put your mind at ease, you should know that many customers
were terrified of losing control during their vacations, yet pleasantly
surprised when they returned to find that their weight and bodyfat
ratio had either stayed the same or actually improved!
A regimen like this cannot go on forever so if you know that you
are leaving for more than two weeks, you should carry your weight
loss "kit" with you.
If your vacation is less than two weeks, the following holiday rules
will do just fine:
Don't bother weighing yourself. You'll only drive yourself
crazy. Your weight will fluctutate and by now you have learned that
the scale matters little in the big scheme of things. Pay more attention
to what you eat and how you feel. Ignore the temptation to hop on
the scale.
Don't annoy your friends and family with your diet. They
don't need to rearrange their holiday around your eating schedule
or requirements. Try and conform to the meal at hand and if you
must sneak one of your five meals in, go ahead and do it without
sounding the horns. Take care of your needs, but don't expect everyone
to adhere to your requirements.
The only rule you must follow when on vacation is to have
frequent small meals with mixed nutrients. When you're on vacation,
some people find themselves wandering for hours looking for a restaurant
that will suit everybody. This means that you'll end up starving
before you reach your food. If you are going out as a group for
the day, stuff a sandwich, some fruit and perhaps a water bottle
into your bag or purse.
Be sure to have a substantial breakfast and eat everything healthy
you can lay your hands on. Don't worry, you will have ample
time during your active day to burn every single calorie of your
hearty breakfast. Should you anticipate a stagnant day of watching
football on the couch, you may want to modify this rule.
By applying the few rules listed above, your holidays can be as
enjoyable as long as you stay active. In addition, vacations and
holidays are the perfect opportunity to satisfy your cravings without
guilt!
